§ 11. Marshal and police.

  • Be it further enacted, that the marshal and policemen of said town shall have authority, and it shall be their duty, to execute the laws, by-laws, and ordinances of the town council, to arrest without warrant all offenders against the peace and good order of the town and all violations of its laws, ordinances and carry them before the mayor or councilmen sitting in his stead, or confine them in the guard house until they can be brought before the proper authority, and if necessary they may call to their assistance any of the citizens of said town to enable them to make the arrest, and any person refusing or neglecting to assist them when so called upon shall be fined not exceeding ten dollars or imprisonment not exceeding ten hours, and in the absence of the marshal, the deputy marshal and policemen, or either, shall perform the duties and be entitled to the privileges conferred by this section.
